Kate Garraway remembered her late husband Derek Draper on Tuesday for their 20th wedding anniversary, telling fans she is ‘so lucky’ to have known his love.

Derek, with whom Kate, 57, shares daughter Darcey, 18, and son Billy, 15, died in January at the age of 56 from complications of Covid-19.

Kate shared a video with her 1.3M Instagram followers explaining what the day meant to her.

She began: ‘Today would’ve been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek.

‘I mean, it still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek, it’s just one of those days, that we’ve talked about, like Christmas to come, Easter. All of those things – his birthday – where you really feel a punch to the stomach.

This one, particularly, I’ve been feeling really sorry for myself, I’m afraid, because it’s such a personal thing.

‘The others are as much, when he was here, made about the family, friends, all of that, whereas this day is so particularly special to him and I (sic).

‘The fact that he’s not here makes me feel very sad and notice his absence like a roaring, roaring train.

‘I’ve been the leaning into the grief, as everyone says you have to, and I’ve been re-reading some of his lovely anniversary messages on previous cards which I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I’m so lucky.’

On Wednesday’s National Television Awards,Kate is hoping to scoop the gong for Authored Documentary with Derek’s final documentary Derek’s Story.

She is up against Rose Ayling-Elis for Signs Of Change, Rhod Gilbert for A Pain In The Neck for Standing Up 2 Cancer, Robbie Williams for his documentary of the same name and David Beckham for Beckham.

Kate rewatched the documentary ahead of the NTAs and told her followers that she ‘marvelled’ at Derek’s spirit.

She asked viewers to put in their last-minute votes for Derek’s Story and also encouraged them to vote for the ‘incredible’ programmes in the other categories.

Kate wrote in the caption of Tuesday’s post: ‘So it’s our wedding anniversary today & feeling super emotional but also so grateful to all that Derek brought into my life.

‘Leaning into the #grief, by re reading his old cards to me & also watching the doc #dereksstory – reminding myself of how he fought to the end to get back more of his life & for change for others.

‘It’s the #officialntas tomorrow & it will be so hard to go without him with us – but Darcey, Bill & I WILL go – to celebrate his life, the message he wanted heard & to honour all the hard work of doctors nurses & carers everywhere – paid & unpaid for the incredible work they do every day.

‘Vote if you can for #dereks story – there’s lots of great shows on there to vote for link is here & in my bio # #caringsociety #nevergiveup.’
