Do you realize? Eagle eyed Gavin & Stacey fans spot major blunder in Christmas Special as they notice 'completely wrong' moment

Gavin & Stacey fans flagged a significant error about a location featured in the Christmas Day special of the popular BBC sitcom.

The episode, which served as the show’s ‘finale,’ drew over 12 million viewers and featured plenty of drama.

From Smithy (played by James Corden) leaving bride-to-be Sonia (played by Laura Aikman) at the altar to his last-minute proposal to Nessa (played by Ruth Jones), it had fans gripped.

The plot saw Smithy race from Essex to the Port of Southampton to stop Nessa from leaving the UK for a new job, culminating in their marriage.

However, eagle-eyed viewers from Southampton pointed out that scenes set at the port and surrounding areas didn’t look authentic.

It is now believed that those scenes were filmed over 100 miles away in Wales – specifically at Newport Docks in Newport.

Taking to X, they wrote: ‘[Finale] was great but as someone from #Southampton, the perception of the port was completely wrong.’

‘[Episode] was just sheer perfection (glossing over the ‘Southampton’ docks location).’

Firstly, where on Earth is this? [crying laughing emoji] is not Southampton! Secondly, SOUTHAMPTON ARE MASSIVE EVERYWHERE WE GO!! #GavinAndStacey

One user replied to let them know where it was actually filmed divulging: ‘And that Southampton docks was actually Newport docks’

This isn’t the first time the show has opted for Welsh locations to double as English settings.

Although Mick Shipman’s home is said to be in Billericay, Larry Lamb previously revealed that the original series was entirely filmed in Wales.

Speaking about the production to Radio Times, he explained: ‘Nobody offered us the opportunity to go to Essex.’

It comes as fans also spotted what Smithy’s jilted lover Sonia had been in before her Gavin and Stacey appearance.

As Laura returned to TV screens as Sonia, those who grew up in the 90s started to realise the actress’ other iconic role – Mysti from The Mysti Show.

The Mysti Show aired from April 2004 to December 2005.

The show saw Laura take on the role of a half-human half-fairy being called Mysti.

Each 20 minute episode saw Mysti ‘magic her own unique blend of entertainment and comedy drama with celebrity guests.’

In 2000, Laura featured in an episode of long-running hospital drama Casualty – the catalyst for a series of guest roles that would include appearances in The Bill, Doctors and That Mitchell And Webb Look.

Gavin And Stacey star shows shocked parents after Sonia return

But in 2009 she secured the first of two recurring roles, as Lucy in hit BBC Three series Personal Affairs and – more significantly – in a return to Casualty, this time as Nurse May Phelps.

A third major TV role came in 2016, when Aikman was cast as Lorna Hutchinson for the tenth series of BBC drama Waterloo Road.

Other TV roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Pramface, Citizen Khan and Bluestone 42 – where she met her husband Matt Kennard in 2015.

Laura’s return as Sonia was one that shocked nation as even her own parents did not know until they watched it on Christmas day.

The actress had been ‘hidden away’ in a separate hotel during filming after signing an NDA to protect the major plot twist.
