Gavin and Stacey viewers couldn’t believe their eyes when one of the show’s iconic characters returned to screens on Wednesday night.

Fans of the BBC drama have been eagerly awaiting to watch Gavin and Stacey: The Finale.

The last instalment of the programme was back in 2019, and it ended with Nessa proposing to Smithy.

Many were left wondering what actually happened next between the pair and if they actually got married.

And one character who appeared in the final instalment was their son Neil (played by Oscar Hartland).

The teen ran up to his mum while at work at the amusement arcade and shouted: ‘I got in!’

He added: ‘To college – the plumbing course. I got accepted! I do college three days a week and work placement with my dad the other two.’

Nessa asked: ‘Have you told him, your father?’

‘Not yet, I’ve only just found out!’ he replied.

Nessa said: ‘I’m proud of you, genuine. Take anything you want from the grabbers.’

Fans had to double take when the youngster appeared on their TV screens.

Many took to X to say the same thing about the 16-year-old.

One questioned on the platform: ‘omg is that Neil the baby!!?? #GavinAndStacey.’

A second wrote: ‘Oh wow Neil so big now.’

‘NEIL THE BABY IS SO OLD,’ a third simply said.

Another questioned: ‘HOW OLD IS NEIL THE BABY????????’

A fourth said: ‘No way that is Neil the baby.’

‘The fact that Neil the baby is a teenager now makes me feel so incredibly old,’ a fifth confessed.

Neil, who has also been played by Ewan Kennedy, made his first appearance at the end of series two on Gavin and Stacey, after Nessa and Smithy had a one-night stand.

Throughout the series, the two refused to talk about what actually happened and continued to ignore their connection.

It comes after James Corden revealed that he does have plans to do ANOTHER TV show with Ruth Jones.

The pair have worked hard together over the years to write Gavin and Stacey.

 During a recent chat on Heart Radio, James said of their potential new programme: ‘It might be a while, it might take us a while…

‘We got to find us a new idea, but we are definitely, definitely, going to give it a shot.’

The return of the BBC drama was confirmed earlier this year.

Gavin and Stacey premiered in 2007 and has three successful series before wrapping up in 2009.
