Fans of Good Morning Britain were outraged as a guest on the ITV show tried to “defend” Sir Keir Starmer. It comes as the Prime Minister has come under scrutiny for allegedly breaking lockdown rules during the coronavirus pandemic when he went to a voice coaching session in December 2020.

Labour peer Baroness Ayesha Hazarika and former Downing Street Director of Communications Guto Harri joined the programme to chat to hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls about the topic. They discussed the fact that police have chosen to take no action over the allegations.

Ayesha claimed that it was a “last ditch” and “desperation” from the Tories and Reform UK to “try and rehash” the Covid story. She said: “They’re sort of trying to say ‘oh well, he’s the same as Boris Johnson’.

“Let’s not forget that during Covid, Downing Street was the most fined address for Covid offenses.”

But Susanna defended the Tories as she said: “But if this had come out now about Boris Johnson, you would jump on it and say here’s another example of how he broke his own rules.”

The guest responded, as she roped Ed into the debate, saying: “We worked with politicians, Ed, who were getting voice training.” The GMB host cut in as he said: “But I wasn’t working in the Covid pandemic so therefore…”

Ayesha didn’t back down as she continued: “No, but when we were in politics working with the leader of the opposition, we know that people get training and stuff like that.”

Susanna then interjected as she pointed out that people “didn’t care” about the voice coach. They were more outraged about the breaking of rules.

As the guest and hosts continued to shout over each other, fans at home could not believe what they were watching. Taking to X/Twitter, one user wrote: “@GMB Woman trying her best to say @Keir_Starmer was right to break rules. Getting all het up.”

Another added: “Switched the TV on first thing – ED BALLS ON, SWITCHED OFF!” While a third shared: “And she is trying to get us to believe he had a ‘voice coaching session’ on Christmas Eve?? Does she think we were born yesterday??”

“One rule for Keir and another rule for the rest of us…,” someone else fumed while another said: “Ask Starmer to produce the invoice received for ‘voice coaching’ covering that period plus the expense claim that marries up with it.

“Ask the voice coach to confirm this was included in her tax return for y/e 2022/2023. Ask Starmer AGAIN to confirm all rules followed! Let’s see!!”
