Martin Clunes’ ITV drama suffers major blow as rival series beats it in TV ratings

Martin Clunes’ new drama Out There has been dealt a huge blow.

Out There: Martin Clunes’ character flushes drugs down toilet

ITV’s new drama Out There, starring Martin Clunes, experiences a setback as another hot series steals the spotlight in the latest TV ratings clash.

The show has gripped audiences with its stark portrayal of county lines drug trafficking and its impact on rural areas, following the character Nathan’s harrowing journey.

Clunes shines as Nathan Williams, a Welsh farmer battling against drug traffickers wreaking havoc in his community.

Despite its compelling narrative, ITVX celebrated its most successful day since the Euro finals in July 2024, all thanks to the reality sensation Love Island: All Stars, which amassed 3 million streams on Monday evening.

The platform enjoyed an 18% increase from the same day last year, outperforming Out There by nearly 2 million streams. Although trailing behind, Out There still pulled in an impressive 2.1 million streams, surpassing soap favourites Coronation Street and Emmerdale, which both gathered 1.8 million viewers, reports the Mirror.

However, since hitting the screens, Clunes’ attempt at a Welsh accent in Out There didn’t sit well with all viewers, leading to backlash on social media platforms.

Audience members quickly voiced their opinions online about the actor’s regional pronunciation.

“As a Welsh person, this welsh accent is poor. Martin, you’re great but the accent is really off putting. I can’t watch it #OutThere,” lamented one viewer on Twitter. (sic)

Viewers have been quick to critique Clunes’ attempt at a Welsh accent in the new drama, with one stating: “I mean, there are a number of distinct Welsh accents but this is none of them. #OutThere.” (sic)

Another chimed in, saying: “Martin Clunes Welsh accent is bad but not bad like Stephen Graham’s in White House Farm #OutThere.” (sic)

Meanwhile, some fans are fixated on the accent debate, as one tweet read: “#OutThere The thing that most annoys me about the accent is that it’s the only thing people are tweeting about.” (sic)

Despite the criticism, there are those who stand by Clunes’ performance, with a supportive viewer commenting: “I’m Welsh. I have no problem with it. There are so many different accents in Wales.”

Amidst the mixed reactions, ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill has praised the show, remarking: “Out There is a brilliantly compelling drama, from the team behind Manhunt, where county lines become very real for a father and son already dealing with the modern challenges of running a farm.”

She added her commendation for the lead actor: “Martin Clunes is wonderful as Nathan, in a drama full of surprises, as he tries to navigate the best way to save his son, in a world he doesn’t understand.”

Love Island: All Stars continues tonight at 9pm across ITVX and ITV2 and Out There airs on ITV1, with the full box set also available to watch now on ITVX
