Liverpool have turned down an approach from Real Madrid regarding a potential January transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Spanish club, long linked with the Reds’ right-back, had been expected to wait until the summer to pursue the player on a free transfer when his contract expires.

However, with first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal sidelined for the season, Real Madrid reportedly contacted Liverpool on New Year’s Eve to explore the possibility of signing the England international as soon as the transfer window opens on January 1.

Liverpool, however, made it clear they have no intention of selling Alexander-Arnold during the January window.

The club immediately rejected Real Madrid’s inquiry and remains firm on keeping the influential defender for the remainder of the season as they push for Premier League glory under Arne Slot.

It is unclear if Madrid’s approach included a financial offer, but Liverpool are unwilling to entertain further discussions and are planning for the second half of the campaign with Alexander-Arnold in their squad.

Despite this, the 26-year-old will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs about a summer move starting January 1, and Liverpool expect Real Madrid to take advantage of this option.

Negotiations between Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold’s representatives over a contract renewal have been ongoing for several months.

On Saturday, Spanish outlet Marca claimed the player had decided to join Real Madrid when his contract expires and had informed Liverpool of his decision. However, sources close to Liverpool indicate that no such communication has been made.

The speculation intensified after Alexander-Arnold scored in Liverpool’s 5-0 victory over West Ham, a result that extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

The vice-captain’s “talking” celebration appeared to express frustration with ongoing media rumors about his future.

When asked to clarify his celebration and plans after the match, Alexander-Arnold only smiled and declined to comment. Liverpool will now turn their attention to their upcoming clash against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
