Corrie icon makes epic return after nearly a decade for huge Eileen Grimshaw storyline

Coronation Street fans are in for a treat as an iconic character is set to make a return to the cobbles in a huge storyline for Eileen Grimshaw.

Coronation Street fans are in for a treat as Katy Cavanagh is set to reprise her role as Julie Carp, nearly ten years after leaving the show.

In episodes scheduled to air next month, Julie will make a surprise return to Weatherfield, much to the delight of her sister Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and her youngest son Todd (Gareth Pierce).

This comes ahead of Cleaver’s departure from the ITV soap this spring, after a 25-year stint as Eileen.

The reasons behind Julie’s return and the duration of her stay remain a mystery, with the soap’s bosses keeping details under wraps.

Julie first graced the cobbles in 2008 following a holiday romance with Kirk Sutherland (Andy Whyment).

When things didn’t work out with Kirk, she moved on to Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas), which led to the revelation that she was Eileen’s half-sister and Jason’s aunt.

Julie’s romantic journey continued with a brief fling with Eileen’s then-boyfriend Jessie Chadwick (John Thomson), before finding love with newsagent Brian Packham (Peter Gunn).

The pair left Coronation Street together in 2015, but their relationship didn’t stand the test of time, leading to Brian’s solo return, reports the Liverpool Echo.

How will Brian react to Julie’s unexpected comeback? Only time will tell.

Cavanagh is over the moon to be returning to her role as the effervescent Julie on Coronation Street, exclaiming: “It is exciting to dust off Julie’s quirky wardrobe again and an absolute joy to step back onto the cobbles. Julie is so much fun, I’ve missed her.”

The show’s producer, Kate Brooks, teases a captivating storyline with Julie’s comeback: “We’re delighted to have the inimitable Julie Carp back on the Cobbles.

“As the ever lovable Julie breezes back into the lives of the Grinshaws, not everything is quite as it seems, and Julie’s secret sets off a chain of events that has huge ramifications for Eileen.”

Brooks also commended Katy’s seamless reintegration into the cast: “Katy has slipped back into Julie’s shoes with such ease that it’s like she’s never been away, and we can’t wait for the audience to watch Julie’s story unfold; a story full of love, laughter and tears.”

Corrie enthusiasts should take note, as Cavanagh has already begun filming, and Julie’s anticipated return to Weatherfield is slated for February 21st.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
