Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp locked horns over Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s contract situation at Liverpool.
The right-back, who joined the Reds’ academy when he was six, will be out of his current deal at the end of the season.
The 26-year-old has been earmarked for a blockbuster move to Real Madrid, with contract negotiations at Liverpool stagnating in recent weeks.
Indeed, Alexander-Arnold has remained somewhat coy on his Anfield future, only stating that details around his contract situation will not be revealed publicly.
Carragher argued that the England star has an opportunity to stay in Merseyside and become an all-time great for Liverpool.
‘If he stays at the club. He’ll be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play for the football club, and not far behind Steven Gerrard,’ the Liverpool legend said.

Jamie Redknapp argued that Alexander-Arnold should be able to freely decide his future
‘If he doesn’t, he won’t be remembered like that. Now, if he doesn’t care about that, that’s fine, but I’m only telling you what Liverpool supporters [think].
He continued to note that if Alexander-Arnold were to leave, Liverpool fans would be more understanding if he signed a contract at the club, so they receive some financial benefit from his departure, which would not be the case if he were to exit on a free transfer.
‘If I was advising Trent, I would say, it’s not just leaving. I think people understand it with Real Madrid,’ Carragher added.
‘A lot of it is the free transfer. That’s a lot of anything. It’s that fear of not you leaving us, [but] “Where’s our money to replace you?”
‘You might not agree with that, but it’s just a fact. I would say, “Sign a contract. Have a decent buyout clause in there that’s not ridiculous. And if Real Madrid want to buy you in 12 months…”‘
Redknapp opposed Carragher’s view, arguing that Alexander-Arnold has earned the opportunity to explore his options away from Anfield, considering all he has achieved at the club.
‘I think you’re being really unfair… I’m talking purely just as a football person,’ Redknapp argued.
‘Liverpool should have got the contract sorted out. What you can’t say is, “Oh, sign a contract.”
‘So, if he signs a year contract and he gets injured, then what happens? He’s got an opportunity to go and get a five year contract or whatever, at Real Madrid and try something different in his life.
‘I’ve got total respect for whatever he wants to do, because he’s given everything to Liverpool. He saved them fortunes by not having to buy a right back of his quality.’
