Mohamed Salah gets better of Cole Palmer as Liverpool legend named Fans’ Footballer of the Year

Mohamed Salah has completed yet another career hattrick after being crowned Fans’ Footballer of the Year for the third time in five years.

The Egyptian has had a stunning 12 months on Merseyside under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. The first half of 2024 saw him net 11 goals, while his record of 29 goals and assists in just 23 games for the Reds since the summer has put him on track for the most productive season of his already glittering career.

His contract status means there’s still a question mark over the 32-year-old’s future, but the latest award is proof that Salah still has plenty more to offer at Anfield despite his advancing years.

Over 45,000 fans cast their vote for both a national winner and individual club titles, with Salah unsurprisingly also being named Liverpool’s top performer of 2024. The legendary winger beat Cole Palmer to the award, with the Chelsea star claiming second place ahead of Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, who was third.

Gordon had been hoping to make it a hattrick of his own, with Magpies stars having won the award for the past two years – first with Bruno Guimaraes in 2022, then with teammate Kieran Trippier in 2023.

Bukayo Saka was next on the list in fourth having led both Arsenal and England to the cusp of silverware this summer before ultimately falling short on both counts. The winger is still on course to break the Premier League’s assist record in a single season.

Andre Onana rounded off the top five as Manchester United’s sole representative in the national vote, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri ranked sixth despite having not kicked a ball for Manchester City since September after suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

Which of the 12 Fans’ Footballer of the Year 2024 nominees gets your vote?
Jude Bellingham, Virgil van Dijk and Khadija Shaw were also among the nominees, and you can find the full ranking of the top 12 by visiting the award page here.

Fans of all 20 top-flight teams also got to name their club winners, with Amad comfortably beating Onana to the Manchester United crown despite missing out on the national vote. The 22-year-old has enjoyed a stunning resurgence under Ruben Amorim, and undoubtedly benefited from the vote taking place just as the Ivorian was finding form at Old Trafford.

There were closer battles elsewhere, with Emi Martinez beating Ollie Watkins to the Aston Villa award by just three votes, while eight votes separated West Ham winner Jarrod Bowen from second-placed Mohamed Kudus.
