Stephen Mulhern swipes ‘stop this and get out!’ at mortified audience member as they interrupt his tribute to late father and grandfather on The Royal Variety Show

Stephen Mulhern took a swipe at a stunned Royal Variety Show audience member on Sunday in the middle of his performance on Sunday.

The presenter, 47, was making a touching tribute to his late father Christopher, as well as his grandfather when he yelled out to the crowd, singling out one guest in particular to help with his skit.

During the ITV show, the host of Deal Or No Deal performed a small magic trick for viewers but things took an chaotic turn when he enlisted the help of one member of the audience for a special task.

The show, hosted this year by Amanda Holden and Alan Carr, included a host of different acts who performed for King Charles III.

Before starting his magic show, Stephen explained that he had a confetti detonator and he needed a special person to set it off whenever he did anything funny.

He said: ‘I need to show you this, this here is a detonator. Now, let me tell you, when you press this button here, it changes the entire show.

‘It sets off fireworks, it changes the lighting, it changes the music.

‘So, we need somebody very responsible to look after this!’ Heading off into the crowd, Stephen walked around until he found the ideal candidate to look after the detonator.’

The Catchphrase host singled out one guest, Adam, to help him with his show and instructed him to press the button whenever he did anything funny before warning him to ‘be very careful, be very responsible’.

Stephen then began his act, ripping up pieces of paper before making them whole again.

But after showing off the small trick, the star revealed that he was performing the seemingly simple illusion as a tribute to his grandfather.

He said: ‘There’s a reason I do this trick, I don’t want to bring the atmosphere down, but my grandad taught me how to do this trick when I was just 11 years old.

‘Sadly, my grandad passed away two weeks ago.’

And it was at that moment that Adam decided to press the buzzer, shocking Stephen, who promptly barked at the guest.

Playing up the faux pas, Stephen quipped: ‘Stop this! That was the wrong time my friend! What the hell were you thinking?’.

The host then ran over to Adam, laughing before yanking him out of his seat saying: ‘Come with me, no, come with me. Get out, get out.

‘I’m not joking get out, stay out,’ before pushing him behind a curtain at the back of the auditorium.

At the end of the hilarious performance, Stephen shared a heartfelt tribute to his father, ending his act by saying: ‘That was for you, Dad.’

A representative for Stephen Mulhern confirmed that interruption was part of the star’s performance and was done in good humour.

It’s been a very tough year for one of ITV’s top favourite presenters who has faced a mystery health scares, property issues and the tragic passing of his father.

It was revealed last month that the Dancing On Ice presenter’s father Christopher recently passed away.

A spokesperson for Stephen told MailOnline: ‘Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful.

Stephen was born in east London in 1977 to parents Christopher and Maureen who worked as market traders.

The star has credited his success to his parents saying: ‘I don’t mean to sound soppy, but they worked so incredibly hard to bring up me and my two brothers and sister.’

Raised alongside his three siblings, he honed his people skills by working on his father’s market stall before he went on to pursue his career as a magician.

Elsewhere this year Stephen has been fighting against a series of health woes and just last month an ambulance was called after staff at a Pizza Express became concerned for him at around 8pm.

As a precaution, he was taken from Sunningdale, Berks, to nearby Frimley Park hospital in Camberley, Surrey after being checked over by paramedics.

After paramedics helped Stephen, he called his mother Maureen to assure her that he was OK and is now at home resting up and is mortified to have had such a public reaction to the anaesthetic.

A source told MailOnline: ‘He had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday, 27). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell.’
