WNBA legend Sue Bird was recently chatting with United States women’s soccer legend Megan Rapinoe on their joint podcast, “A Touch More.”
While both gave insight on the WNBA, with some teams clinching playoff spots and some players making league history, Bird and Rapinoe shared high praise for Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese.
Reese has recorded three straight games of 20 or more rebounds, becoming the only player in the WNBA to do so. She’s quickly turned into one of the most talented players on the glass, being known for her activity around the rim.
Sue Bird believes Reese has been incredibly impressive.
She mentioned the first-year star has tied Tina Charles for the most double-doubles in a rookie season with 22, and that record is in jeopardy of being broken with ample time left in the season.
“She’s continuing to just rack up the double-doubles,” Bird said. “She’s tied Tina Charles’ record for the amount of double-doubles in a row in a rookie season and she’ll most likely break that. She just had back-to-back-back 20 rebounds games. … It is incredibly impressive.”
Rapinoe dropped her insight on the history made by Reese, commenting on the rookies elite skill set.
“It’s crazy,” Rapinoe said. “That’s wild, so many rebounds. That’s just when people have a specific skill and it’s just like, they’re the best at this like one thing. It’s just so cool to see that. I love that.”
Reese has averaged 13.3 points and 12.9 rebounds per game throughout her rookie season. She’s the only rookie averaging a double-double and also leads the WNBA in terms of average rebounds.
Her rebounding prowess has been on display at an all-time high of late.
Despite the Sky riding a three-game losing streak, Reese recorded 11 points and 22 rebounds against the Las Vegas Aces, 13 points and 20 rebounds against the Connecticut Sun and 19 points and 20 rebounds against the Phoenix Mercury.
Chicago has lost four of its last five games, but Reese has been far from the issue. The Sky are eighth in the WNBA overall standings with an 11-18 record. They have 11 games left on the schedule to keep their playoff hopes alive. The top eight teams in the WNBA make the postseason, so Chicago has a ticket but it can be lost if it continues to rack up losses.
