Shaq Diesel rapped, “The hate, I get it excessively, The cake, I get it aggressively.” That was GAWNE in their 2023 ‘holiday song.’
But Shaquille O’Neal’s got experience taking on the haters since 1992.
And he’s doing it this time for his prodigy. Angel Reese is making and breaking Shaq-tastic records.
Yet trolls are targeting her shooting skills and accusations of stat-padding. Very few believe the Chicago Sky rookie is in league with the Big Aristotle.
The giant himself heard it and had a response to it.
In collaboration with one of his own fan pages, Shaq shared a Reel on Instagram that directly took on Angel Reese’s haters.
The clip graphically alters between the two LSU superstars with a very a telling narrative.
“Angel Reese just did something nobody’s done since Shaq, but fans think she’s cheating.”
Reese recorded two consecutive 20+ rebounds games in August, a feat only O’Neal did in his rookie season in April 1993.
She further extended that streak to three in the next game. In the video Shaq posted, it said, “It takes a masterclass to grab 20 rebounds in a game, on any level.”
It presented some interesting facts from the last NBA season where there were only 42 games with 20+ rebounds and only two players did it more than three times.
As the WNBA games are shorter than NBA’s regulation time, “What Reese is doing is even more incredible. She became the first WNBA player, rookie or not, to ever go for 20 board in back-to-back games, then did it a third time just for kicks.” But the record is criticized more than celebrated.
Chicago Sky’s record is shaky at best and it’s fighting to keep its playoff spot.
Meanwhile, for all the hype, Reese’s FG% needs a little to be desired.
That’s not to say that grabbing rebounds over and over is not a small feat. Because, “The last NBA rookie to do it even twice? Shaq, in 1993.”
No rookies in both leagues had repeated O’Neal’s three decade old record until his ‘daughter’ came into the WNBA.
“But despite Reese surpassing her fellow LSU alum, screams of stat-padding follow her wherever she goes.
These haters think she’s missing by the rim on purpose to get more boards.” To these haters, Shaquille O’Neal says, “But it happened and the haters will just have to keep hating. Because one thing that was true in ’93 still rings true today – ‘Ball Don’t Lie!’”
Shaq is on his ‘daughter’s’ side
Shaquille O’Neal arrived to watch his first WNBA game this season courtside for Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever’s marquee matchup on Friday.
He’s a fan of the entire rookie class, but Angel Reese has a special place in his universe.
He referred to her as his ‘niece’ since she won LSU its first NCAA championship. But at this game, he said she’s “like a daughter” to him.
It explains his protective feelings for her which have been on display since she was dragged as a collegiate player.
In Friday’s game, Reese surpassed Tina Charles for the most rebounds by a rookie. She tallied 399 boards and counting.
Like a certain NBA legend’s early seasons in Chicago – *cough* Jordan *cough* – she’s been accused of chasing individual records and not make her team win.
The Reebok revival boss was there solely to cheer for her as she laced up in the first Reebok basketball performance shoe in a decade, the Reebok Engine A. Despite Sky’s blowout 81-100 loss to Indiana, Shaq was thrilled for both Reese and Clark’s record-breaking night. He’s still campaigning for the Chi-Town Barbie for ROTY though.
One thing’s for sure, anyone who claims she’s sullying Shaq’s legacy is dead wrong. O’Neal couldn’t be more prouder of Angel Reese and he’d keep lifting her up no matter how this season ends.
