BBC Breakfast star Sally Nugent awkwardly halted the show on Monday as she slammed her co-star for going “too far”. Sally was back in the BBC studio alongside her co-star Jon Kay, the BBC co-presenter, from 6am with an episode airing until 9.30am.

Sally and Jon were joined by chef Tom Barnes on Monday’s show, who shared an unusual food combination for the festive period. Jon shared with viewers that jelly is making a comeback, with sales surging by 500 per cent in the past month.

Sally asked: “Has Mary Berry done something with jelly? Has something happened?” Jon replied: “Apparently, everybody wants jelly wobbling back onto the menu this Christmas.” Jon asked: “What about blancmange? Whatever happened to blancmange?”

Sally said: “I think you’ve gone a step too far there Jon, I think. Maybe not.” Chef Tom explained: “For me, the mince pie is quite sweet, so the blue cheese adds that savoury to it. It just balances it out a little bit.

“If you think about what you would traditionally eat with cheese anyway, like chutneys, some fruit and maybe a glass of port, the flavours work so a warm mince pie with a little bit of blue cheese on top is something I like to have at the end of the day.”

He said: “I wouldn’t dream of eating it at this time!” Sally, sampling it, said: “It’s fine, after a Christmas dinner? I don’t think I’d eat it after a Christmas dinner. I think because the mince pie is cold, maybe it needs warming up?”

Jon said: “It’s good! It’s about balancing out flavours, isn’t it?” And Tom told the pair: “Yeah, like you say it’s just a personal preference. I think a mince pie is nice on its own, but for me, I like that a little bit more savoury.”
