WNBA in Covid nightmare as Chicago Sky are forced to CANCEL practice with ‘multiple players’ ill – sparking fears other teams could be infected
A potential Covid outbreak has led to the Chicago Sky abruptly cancelling their practice on Tuesday morning.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, multiple players on the team felt sick – leading to the last-minute cancellation.
A number of players were advised by the team’s medical staff to be wearing masks at the Sky’s practice facility.
‘We’re testing for COVID-19 and speaking with our doctors to hear what they would suggest progression-wise,’ Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca told the Sun-Times.
While the Sun-Times did not specifically reveal any players, later reporting from the paper’s Annie Costabile said that guard Chennedy Carter would be out for Wednesday’s game against the Washington Mystics due to ‘health and safety protocols’.
Chicago Sky ended practice early and tested the team for a possible Covid outbreak Tuesday
At the time of publishing, the only player on the injured list for Wednesday is Chennedy Carter
At the time of publishing, it’s not clear which other players have been dealing with an illness – as Carter is the only person on Chicago’s injured list.
Fans speculated that because Carter was the only one on the injury report, that she may be the source of any potential outbreak – with one saying, ‘The whole WNBA is about to have Covid because of Chennedy Carter.’
Many more on social media were wishing Carter well and telling her to feel better as she recovers.
This news arrives less than 24 hours before a game between the Mystics and Sky was set to tip off at Wintrust Arena in suburban Chicago. The Sky are also set to play the Indiana Fever on Friday.
According to Pagliocca, the team believes they will have enough healthy players to field a roster against the Mystics.
Chicago last played a game against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday in a close 77-75 defeat.
When asked by a reporter about having to test her players, Aces coach Becky Hammon said ‘it was the first she was hearing of any illness.’ Las Vegas plays the Dallas Wings on Tuesday night.
